St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church
  • Lost people matter to God, therefore they matter to us.
  • The Church is a place of spiritual healing for wounded people.
  • Full devotion to Christ is normal for every believer.
  • Worship must be vibrant and culturally relevant while remaining theologically faithful.
  • Christ-followers should manifest spiritual authenticity and yearn for continuous growth.
  • A call to servanthood and ministry is the natural progression for the maturing believer.
  • Loving relationships should permeate all aspects of our Christian Community.
  • The church should be led by people with leadership gifts and training.
The Biblical foundation for our vision is found in:

Matthew 28:19
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

1 Corinthians 13:13
“faith, hope, and love abide”
Although we welcome everyone to this community of faith, we recognize that God has placed us is a demographic area that highlights the needs of young families. These families are culturally and ethnically diverse, yet have many common concerns.
Understanding Our Mission
We believe we are called to reach the unchurched thousands of Eastern Howard County, Maryland. Diverse in age, ethnicity, life experience and economic stratum, these are the lost people to whom God sent his Son, Jesus Christ. Through our public ministries and missions we will provide hospitality to strangers, equip members to reach others for Christ, and support fellow believers as they live out their faith in daily life. God empowers us to impact an emerging postmodern culture with the life-transforming Gospel. This transformation is grounded in Faith, Hope, and Love.

Growing in Faith, we venture outside our comfort zone and let God mold and shape us into his image. We discover we want to be in a community that takes seriously the discipline of spiritual formation; moving us into deeper levels of commitment: from seeker, to member to committed to core.

Growing in Hope, we focus on the Cross of Christ and we become a voice of hope. We serve those in need within and beyond our community of faith, by congregational ministries and our daily vocations.

Growing in Love, we experience authentic Christian community: vulnerability in a place of safety, especially in small groups. We learn to love more profoundly and more deeply. Through public acts of hospitality, we experience a greater diversity in age and ethnicity of those who are part of our disciple community.
Growing Means “Building Capacity” Using Our Six Purposes

Adapted from Christian A. Schwartz , Natural Church Development, ChurchSmart Resources, 1998. Capacity expands.
The lost are brought to Christ, believers grow into mature Christians, and seeds of new life are planted.
